HOW IS IT A DISEASE?
Scabies is an itchy skin disease caused by the mite ‘Sarcoptes scabies von hominins. It is a type of parasite that can survive in the human body. The female mites, which settle on the upper layer of the human skin, proceed by digging millimetric tunnels in the skin and lay their eggs in the tunnel.
WHAT ARE THE TRANSACTION WAYS?
Scabies is transmitted from person to person in crowded living areas. Infection occurs more frequently in autumn-winter periods when common areas are dense. It can be transmitted from person to person by direct skin contact for 10-15 minutes. Since it can survive for 1-2 days outside the human body, it can be transmitted through common ways such as towels, furniture, beds, sheets, and sofas. It can also be transmitted through sexual contact.
WHAT SYMPTOMS DOES IT CAUSE?
Symptoms begin 3-6 weeks after scabies is infected. The main complaint of patients is intense itching, which increases at night and after a hot shower. Redness due to itching on the skin, crusted or non-scabbed wounds, water-filled blisters can be seen.

Scabies is seen in people of all ages, genders, and races. It can be seen in every individual, regardless of personal hygiene. Itching is often seen on the wrists, elbows, between the fingers, armpits, breasts, around the navel and genital area in patients. It tends to cause itching in the nipples in women and in the genital area in men. In children, it is mostly seen on the head, behind the ears, face, palms, and soles of the feet.
IS TREATMENT DIFFICULT?
Permethrin-containing creams and lotions are the first choices. However, there may be resistance to treatment due to improper application. Another effective treatment option is sulfur mixtures that we have specially prepared in pharmacies. Creams and lotions are applied to the whole body from the neck down after a shower. Systemic treatment containing ivermectin is given to our patients who do not respond to treatment. Symptoms may continue for another 4-6 weeks. The most important point in the treatment is simultaneous treatment with all individuals in close contact, for the duration and in the manner specified by the physician. In addition to the treatments, the items in the environment should be disinfected and the clothes of all family members should be washed and ironed at least 60 degrees. Items that cannot be washed should be kept closed in a large garbage bag for at least 1 week.
